The new chapter discussed key challenges facing the judicial system, such as alleged corruption at different levels, a shortage of judges, complex legal procedures, and inadequate infrastructure.

The top court has halted circulation of the disputed section and sought committee records, while NCERT has withdrawn the book and promised revisions after consultation.

The officials cited also pointed out that the previous Class 8 social science textbook -- which was in use until 2024 -- didn’t mention corruption at all.
