At 14 he dropped out of school, and by age 20 he'd started a potato business in the small southern Idaho community of Declo, Idaho, that would grow into a billion-dollar empire. In fact, the flip of a coin may have changed Idaho history. If a young J. R. Simplot hadn't won a potato sorter in a coin toss, would Idaho still be synonymous with spuds?
